Roamwild PestOff Bird Feeding Station holding feeders 18 inches from the pole

How to Keep Squirrels Off Bird Feeders: The 18-Inch Rule and the 5-Foot Rule

Written by Oliver Freedman, Roamwild USA. Published September 16, 2026.

Short answer: hang the feeder at least 18 inches from any vertical surface a squirrel could cling to, and at least 5 feet off the ground. If the feeder is on a pole, add a baffle 4 to 5 feet up and put the pole 8 to 10 feet from anything a squirrel could jump from. Do that, and even an ordinary feeder gets raided far less; do it with a weight-activated feeder and squirrels stop getting seed.

What a squirrel can actually do

An eastern gray squirrel weighs 14 to 21 oz and is a far better athlete than it looks. Published estimates put its vertical jump at about 4 to 5 feet and its horizontal leap at 8 to 10 feet from a fence, branch or roof. It can climb almost any pole, hang upside down from a hook, and reach sideways from a trunk or fence to a feeder hung too close. Almost every failed squirrel proof feeder we hear about at Roamwild was hung within reach of something.

Rule 1: 18 inches from any vertical surface

A squirrel clinging to a wall, fence, post or trunk can stretch across to a feeder hung close to it and take seed without ever putting its weight on the perch, which is how it defeats a weight-activated feeder. Keep at least 18 inches between the feeder and anything it could cling to. A shepherd's hook or a hanging bracket with an adjustable arm (Roamwild's brackets reach 11 to 17.7 inches out from the mount, so use the full extension) gets a feeder away from a wall or deck rail.

Rule 2: 5 feet off the ground

With a 4 to 5 foot vertical jump, a feeder hanging at 4 feet is a target. Hang the ports at least 5 feet up. On a feeding station, that usually means the arms at 6 feet or more, which is why Roamwild's PestOff Bird Feeding Station adjusts from 79.5 to 98 inches.

Rule 3: 8 to 10 feet from a launch point

Measure from the feeder to the nearest fence top, branch, roof edge, railing or grill. If it is under 8 feet, a squirrel will eventually make the jump. Move the pole or shorten the branch, not the feeder.

Use a baffle on any pole

A dome or stovepipe baffle mounted 4 to 5 feet up the pole stops climbing. It only works if rules 2 and 3 are also met, because a squirrel that can jump above the baffle or onto the feeder from the side does not need to climb.

Choose a feeder that closes on a squirrel

Placement removes the easy routes; a weight-activated feeder handles the squirrel that still gets to a perch. Roamwild's PestOff feeders give every port its own patented spring, so a squirrel on one perch closes only that port and the bird on the other keeps eating, with nothing to calibrate. Single-spring feeders close all their ports together and have to be adjusted by hand. Both work when the placement rules are followed. Our comparison of the main designs is here.

Things that do not work for long

  • Greased poles. Squirrels wait for it to wear off, and it fouls feathers.
  • Cayenne in the seed. Birds do not taste it, squirrels mostly do, but it washes off, blows away and needs constant topping up.
  • Feeders "squirrel-resistant" by material only. A chew-resistant tube stops damage, not theft.
  • Hanging from a tree branch without a baffle. The branch is the launch point.

Reduce the reason to raid

Squirrels come for seed on the ground as much as seed in the feeder. A seed catcher tray under the feeder (Roamwild's PestOff Bird Seed Catcher is one) keeps dropped seed off the lawn and away from rodents. Sunflower hearts spill far less than mixed seed, because birds do not have to shovel through fillers to find what they want. Many birders also report that squirrels leave safflower seed alone while cardinals and chickadees eat it.

A 60-second checklist

  1. 18 inches from any wall, fence, post or trunk.
  2. Ports 5 feet off the ground.
  3. 8 to 10 feet from the nearest jump-off point.
  4. Baffle 4 to 5 feet up any pole.
  5. Weight-activated feeder, hung freely so the perches move.
  6. Seed catcher or sunflower hearts to cut ground spill.

Frequently asked questions

How far can a squirrel jump to a bird feeder?

Published estimates for the eastern gray squirrel are about 4 to 5 feet straight up and 8 to 10 feet across from a fence, branch or roof, which is why the placement rules are 5 feet up and 8 to 10 feet from a launch point.

Why does my squirrel proof feeder still get raided?

Nearly always placement: it hangs within 18 inches of something a squirrel can cling to, or within jumping range. Move it first. If it still fails, email a photo of the setup to the manufacturer; Roamwild's PestOff Promise covers a feeder hung to the rules.

Does safflower seed keep squirrels away?

Many birders report squirrels avoid safflower while cardinals, chickadees and titmice eat it. It is worth trying, but placement is what actually stops them.
